With Loki now starring in his own Disney Plus series, the character truly gets a chance to shine on his own. However, his dynamic with his brother has always been at the core of defining the God of Mischief. While he’s now investigating crimes that threaten to tear apart the fabric of the universe with the mysterious Time Variance Authority, it’s the smaller moments that Loki shares with Thor that fans truly remember most.

Loki knows that Thor likes snakes, so he disguised himself as one to trick Thor when they were kids. When Thor went to pick up the snake (AKA Loki), he transformed back into his true self and stabbed Thor, which sounds a lot more brutal than it actually is.

Thor told Bruce and Valkyrie this anecdote in a rather humorous moment during Thor: Ragnarok, and Loki was pretty proud of himself. Getting one over on your older brother is pretty typical behavior for a mischievous little sibling, and although normal people don’t attack their family members with weapons, a knife wound isn’t much for an all-powerful god. This funny story was a perfect example of how brothers always pick fights with each other, just because they can.

During the first episode of Loki, a look into the past revealed that D.B. Cooper is actually the god of mischief, and the reason that D.B. Cooper was never caught is that Thor and Heimdall opened the bridge to take Loki back to Asgard mid-jump from the plane. Loki said that the entire fiasco was because he lost a bet to Thor and they were both young and reckless at the time.

It seemed pretty fitting that Loki come down to Earth and start meddling in human affairs, just like he always does. This proves that Thor and Loki know how to have fun with each other, and putting Loki through the ringer was definitely Thor’s way of getting back at him for the snake incident.

When Loki was killed by Thanos, a lot of fans were devastated by the possibility of Loki truly being dead this time around. However, there was a shred of light amongst all the heartbreak. Loki sacrificed himself for Thor and tried to take Thanos by surprise so that he could save his brother’s life, and keep him out of harm’s way.

Loki’s now-famous quote “the sun will shine on us again” has been a sign of hope for fans who want to see Loki and Thor back together in the future, working as a team. Their relationship was just beginning to mend when Loki met a brutal fate, and despite all their sibling squabbles and betrayals, Loki has always been there for Thor when he really needs it. His death in Infinity War proves that he was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to keep his brother safe, and there’s a lot of love and trust still between them.

When Thor and Loki fought together to defeat Hela, it cost them everything. Despite Loki’s habit of fleeing the scene any time things get difficult, he stayed for Thor after losing their father at the beginning of the film. They share a moment at the end of the film where Thor expresses his gratitude to Loki for helping him save the people of Asgard, and says that if Loki were actually there he might even give him a hug.

Instead of playing any of his usual tricks, Loki actually stays to help Thor take care of their people now that they have lost their home and to support Thor in his new position as King of Asgard. This marked a major turning point in Loki’s character development and his relationship with Thor. Now that he’s finally given up his dream of taking over the throne and being king, Loki put his own wishes aside to prove once again that he’s always there for his brother when it counts.

Thor never gave up on Loki. Even though Loki claims he wants to trade Thor for a life of comfort in Sakaar during Thor: Ragnarok, and Thor shocks him for it, the important underlying aspects of the relationship between them still prevails. Thor then tells Loki that he’ll always be the god of mischief, yet he still somehow finds a way to put his faith in his brother during this chaotic moment by also telling Loki that he’s capable of becoming so much more than what he is right now.

Having grown up in Thor’s shadow, then discovering that he isn’t actually from Asgard, all Loki ever wanted was approval, acceptance, and equality. Even though Loki was never truly able to receive these things from his parents, Thor has always seen Loki in a positive light, no matter what he’s done. Even after multiple betrayals and years of having a strain put on their relationship by the promise of power, Thor and Loki still understand each other, and Thor manages to see the best in his younger brother, no matter what has happened between them in the past.

Based on Loki’s reaction to seeing his developing relationship with Thor in Loki while watching his life play out on screen, it’s obvious that the god of mischief cares very deeply for his brother. Loki admits that he does bad things because he feels weak and inferior, so Thor’s praise makes Loki feel as if he’s worth something. If Loki is given another chance at life after the events of his new Disney Plus series, fans might get to see him and Thor work on developing a more stable bond. Now that Loki knows power and ruling aren’t the most important things in the world, he finally sees that he doesn’t need a crown to be respected by his brother.
