The game has that developer’s signature style stamped all over it. If gamers didn’t know any better, they might think this a new Dishonored game. Reviews so far are very good, with many agreeing it’s a good showcase for the PS5. Is it really that good or are there some things about Deathloop that could be better?
10 Best: The Story
The narrative, for as retold as the time loop story is, is very entertaining. Part of that is because Colt and Julianna play off of each other so well.
It’s great to hear them bicker back and forth or to have Colt mutter to himself while exploring the world. The game always gives just enough away to the mystery to keep players interested in the mystery until the next lore dump drops.
9 Worst: The First Few Hours
The beginning takes a while to get used to. There are several false starts to what is presented like the loop of the game. Just when players might have a grasp on the situation, things can turn.
The real setup for how Deathloop unfolds won’t be for about three or five hours and that all depends on failure and exploration. Once Residuum unlocks then that’s where the game really gets going. It’s a shame it takes so long as by that point some players might have already given up.
8 Best: The Retro Art Style
If there is one thing Arkane Studios is good at, it’s mixing modern designs with retro art. Deathloop definitely has a 60s and 70s vibe to it.

This is obvious from the characters and items to the future in the game along with art created to promote the game online. Arkane Studios went 100% in on the retro nostalgia and it works wonderfully for this time loop assassination game.
7 Worst: Colt’s Guiding Words
Another striking thing about the aesthetic is the giant words that guide Colt along. While they look cool, they won’t offer players any help.
Half the time it’s a mystery as to what the words are even trying to say. Are they warning Colt of danger or is there something more at play here? That’s a bit of a spoiler but the point is these words aren’t needed and can often feel like clutter.
6 Best: Interacting With The World
Arkane Studios has always made their games with the player in mind. They create worlds that are playgrounds with multiple solutions to a problem. That’s why assassination games like Dishonored are so well-regarded, as the game allowed for experimentation with its tools and powers.
That’s the same idea in Deathloop. There are so many paths to walk, powers to combo, and objects to interact with. The turrets are especially fun to tinker with.
5 Worst: Not Graphically Groundbreaking For Next-Gen
The style of Deathloop is out of this world. But the graphics aren’t anything special considering it’s a next-gen game.

Parts of the game look incredible but it also doesn’t feel like a groundbreaking game that is using every piece of power available in the PS5. The water is especially troubling as there are some buildings in the distance that look like movie studio backdrops.
4 Best: Visionary Keeps
Visionaries are the big bosses in the game that control certain regions of the island. Each facility or area is so well-realized that lends to the power of exploration and experimentation. One of the cooler early standouts can be found while chasing down Charlie in Karl’s Bay.
He has set up a theme park in a castle across this giant bridge. It’s a trippy place to get around as there are moving cardboard cutouts everywhere from spacemen to dragons. That’s just one in many memorable Visionary areas. Defeating them will help players get good items like Trinkets.
3 Worst: Visionary Fights
The Visionary boss fights are not that well thought out. Most of the challenge in the actual fight is getting to them as they are usually hidden or are hiding in a secured location.
Once they are found these encounters turn into a normal gun battle unless players have set up a clever or trap two. They don’t hold a candle to something like Metal Gear Solid although not many games can or have lived up to the heights of that series.
2 Best: Slab Powers
Slabs are the name given to the objects that bestow magical powers in the game. Many of them operate like abilities seen in Dishonored such as Nexus which links multiple kills together or Shift which allows Colt to warp around short distances.
These may be old powers but they are still fun to play around with. As the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. There are plenty of new abilities Arkane Studios introduces as well to be clear. The best tip is to experiment with them all.
1 Worst: The Glitches
The most troubling thing that is weighing down the experience for players is the glitches. The PC version seems to have it the worst but the PS5 is suffering from frustrating issues as well. Sometimes the menu freezes.
If players choose not to have subtitles, they might still appear in Deathloop spontaneously. The controller can go haywire sometimes as well as if some is sitting on it. These problems and more can hopefully be fixed with patches. This is not as problematic as Cyberpunk 2077.
