While we have a lot to like about this new foldable Galaxy device, it’s still not perfect. So, here are the top five things we don’t like about the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3.

1. No S Pen Support

Samsung introduced two new S Pens alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3, but only the more expensive foldable supports them.

Despite having a 30 percent stronger screen protector like the Fold 3, neither the new S Pen Fold Edition or the S Pen Pro work on the Galaxy Z Flip 3. So, this is quite a bummer for someone looking to take notes or draw on this smartphone.

2. No Dust Resistance

This year, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 get IPX8 water resistance, which is quite an achievement considering all the moving parts involved in foldable smartphones.

However, if you look closely, the X in the IPX8 stands for dust resistance rating, and the lack of a number indicates it’s not certified for dust resistance. Finer dust and grit may still sneak in through the hinge, so make sure to take good care of the Galaxy Z Flip 3.

3. Battery Life May Be a Problem

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 has the same 3300mAh battery as the original Z Flip and the Z Flip 5G. Both of these smartphones had fairly average battery life for their size, but the same capacity worries us this time around due to the inclusion of a 120Hz screen.

Most of us know that high refresh rate screens chew through the battery, and if the Flip 3 doesn’t last as long as its predecessor, it’ll be a huge problem.

4. No Under-Display Fingerprint Scanner

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 uses a side-mounted fingerprint scanner that’s integrated into the power button. Its positioning isn’t the best, and since it’s a long foldable phone, you may have trouble reaching it sometimes.

With most flagship smartphones sporting under-display fingerprint sensors in 2021—including the Galaxy S series—we’re surprised that Samsung didn’t bring its ultrasonic fingerprint sensor to the Flip 3.

5. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 Has Average Cameras

When you spend almost a grand on a smartphone, you’d expect a high-end camera system. However, that’s not the case with the new Galaxy Z Flip 3, where folding functionality is the prime focus. You could say the camera is not on par with even the more affordable Galaxy S21 models since it uses the same dual-camera setup as the original Z Flip.

Yes, you get a lot of flexibility with your shots due to the foldable screen, but it’s not a smartphone you should buy if photography is your top priority.

The Flip 3 also misses the under-display selfie camera found on the more expensive Z Fold 3. Instead, you get the same hole-punch camera as the original Flip. On the flip side, this camera should do a way better job at selfies than the Z Fold 3’s under-display camera.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 Isn’t the Perfect Foldable Smartphone

Samsung has brought many changes and improvements to the Galaxy Z Flip 3, like a bigger usable cover screen, water resistance, 120Hz refresh rate on the display, and more. However, the cons we listed here prevent it from being the perfect foldable smartphone we’ve always wanted.

Regardless, for just $999, we think Samsung will have no trouble selling the Galaxy Z Flip 3 like hotcakes and disrupt the mainstream market.
